Peter J. Laubenstein passed away in his sleep on August 30th, 2021 in Chatham, Massachusetts at the age of 70 with his furry friend, Oliver, by his side. Peter was born on August 1st, 1951 in Boston, Massachusetts and attended school in Barrington, RI. Peter enjoyed traveling and spent brief stints living in Las Vegas, NV, Scottsdale, AZ and Florida. Not one to enjoy the heat or dry air of AZ, or the humidity of Florida, Peter always managed to gravitate back to the Cape where his parents and sister both had homes.
Among Peter's favorite pastimes were spending time on long walks with "a man's best friend" his trusty 4-legged German short haired rescue dog companions "Oliver and Willie". Peter also enjoyed visiting with his cousins and their families on numerous occasions in Pennsylvania and Colorado. On one occasion while visiting his cousin Ted and wife Christy, they decided to give him a taste of Colorado. As we wound and climbed our way up to the Colorado National Monument in Grand Junction, we kept hearing gasps and moans coming from Peter in the back seat. When my wife glanced in the backseat, she noticed cousin Peter's white knuckles as he clung to the door handle. When we asked if he would prefer to go down and out to lunch instead of continuing our climb, he immediately belted out his favorite saying, "YOU GOT THAT RIGHT" and even threw in that he would pay for lunch for all of us if we would turn around immediately and head back down to a lower altitude! What we didn't know was that Peter was extremely afraid of heights, but he visited us a few more times for both our twins' weddings and seemed to enjoy the festivities better than the outdoor adventures.
Peter was a big fan of baseball and was a big supporter of the local minor league team. He had a big heart and hosted several out of area team players at his home in Chatham during baseball tournaments. He loved to play and talk bridge and was an avid bridge player. Peter traveled throughout New England and beyond playing bridge in numerous tournaments and then talked about how he enjoyed everyone in his group. During the pandemic when group gatherings were not happening, he took to playing virtual bridge games, and tournaments with all his friends. His weekly games with his local Chatham friends were his favorite pastime.
Peter is survived by his cousins Dr. Jeffrey Martin of Greentown, PA, Ted Martin of Edwards, CO and Nancy Petrin of Newport, RI. Come share your stories and celebrate Peter's life on May 14th at 11:00 at The First Congregational Church of Harwich. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the ASPCA in Peter's honor.
