Born April 21, 1949 in Hyannis, he was raised in Chatham and graduated from Chatham High School. He then enlisted in the US Army where he proudly served his country serving two tours in Vietnam. Following his enlistment, he spent many years working at Chatham Fish and Lobster Co. until he began his own successful aquascaping business, Hinoki Pond Works. Becoming a Master of Ponds from the National Pond Society on February 18, 1996 for Advanced Ornamental Ponds and Water Features was an extremely proud moment for him. Evidence of the true talent he had and beautiful works that he had created can be found throughout Cape Cod. One of his greatest passions was his own backyard, lovingly crafted into a relaxing Japanese Garden with exquisite Koi ponds. Ray was also a very talented photographer who enjoyed a simple and peaceful life outdoors.
Ray is survived by a loving family including, his wife Andrea Wasmer Durkee, daughters Danielle Berg and Adrian Durkee-Bates of Chatham, his son Jimmy Wasmer of Vermont and their families. He was the brother of Maureen Durkee of Andalusia, AL, Pam Mallowes and Julie Durkee of Chatham, and the late Jimmy Durkee of Chatham. He will be sorely missed by his grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A private Celebration of Life will be held in the future. Memorial Donations may be made to the Cape Cod Hospital Healthcare Medical Oncology Department, Hyannis, MA. For online condolences, please visit www.nickersonfunerals.com
