Susan Elisabeth Eldredge, Sue, born on April 10, 1957 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, MA. left this world suddenly on June 3, 2022. Susan was the third child of James Chester Eldredge and Janet Scott Eldredge of Crosswind Farm North Chatham, MA.
Susan was a sweet, sweet soul born with a love and affinity for all the animals she ever encountered. As a child, one of her first pets was a little, fluffy bantam hen named Mrs. Took-a-Bitty. There were also many cats, kittens, dogs and puppies. Most of all she loved horses and ponies. Her first pony, Tanya, arrived after a challenge from her dad: “If you can walk to get the pony and walk it home you can keep it.” Off she went to East Harwich to retrieve the little pony, where the rest of her surprised family joined her for the trek home. Tanya was the beginning of her amazing equestrian journey. She trained Tanya and herself to be their best. They won a Chatham 4th of July Parade ribbon during the fuel crises of the seventies when Tanya, with a carrot strategically placed just ahead of her nose, pulled Sue and her brother Edson in a little sulkie down Main Street with a sign saying, “It’s a Fuel-ish World!” Susan and her mom and dad and brothers would travel to many Cape Cod horse shows and were frequent ribbon winners. She trained many horses, including a foal named Pride, who was born, raised, and trained on Crosswind Farm. Wherever her horse travels took her she brought her fondness for and belief in a horse’s ability to be its best.
There are storms and there are storms; some pass quickly and others settle in. Sue had many struggles and successes, but after the death of her best friend and beloved long-time partner Deb Eldredge in the Spring of 2021 life was difficult.
Sue was predeceased by her Dad, James Chester Eldredge, and her brother, James Richard Eldredge. She is survived by her mom, Janet Scott Eldredge, her sister, Julie Dykens (Jeffrey), her brothers, Scott Eldredge (Jennifer), and Edson Eldredge (Maria); as well as a niece and nephews, and many cousins.
The family will host calling hours at The Nickerson Funeral Home on Crowell Road in Chatham, MA on Monday, June 20th from 4 to 6 PM. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations to a favorite animal cause would be welcome. Thank you.
