Bucky was born on Signal Mountain to Frank Beach and Maude Sims Beach on December 1, 1937. She is survived by her children William (Butch) Hill, Frances Hill Flowers, (son-in-law Joe Flowers) and Pam Parsons. She was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Carla Hill.
As her children grew, Bucky juggled being a single mom in the 1960’s while working full time and putting herself through college. In an era when women couldn’t even get a credit card, she persisted, attaining a BS and MBA in Accounting from University of Chattanooga. Bucky soon became the first woman CPA in the state of Tennessee. She went on to serve in several local and statewide offices for the Tennessee Society of CPAs, despite being turned away from at least one national firm that wouldn’t hire women and said so in her rejection letter in 1967.
Bucky joined Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee in 1969 and worked there for 25 years, becoming the first woman to serve as a Director and the first woman to sit on the board of directors for the company. She retired from Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Director, managing all Corporate Investments and President of the BCBST Credit Union.
Over the years, Bucky was involved in numerous organizations including the Rainbow Girls, the Chattanooga Theatre Center, and the National Honor Society. She served as Treasurer for the Chattanooga Opera Guild, as a board member for the Moccasin Bend Girl Scout Council, held multiple positions within the Chattanooga Chapter of the National Association of Accountants, and was an officer of the local chapter of American Society of Women Accountants.
Bucky loved world travel, Vols football and any other adventure she could find. Her quick wit and great sense of humor were always with her as was her faith, carrying her through it all.
She was a member of St Paul’s Episcopal Church and a great supporter of many charities, including Northside Neighborhood House. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of these organizations.
Funeral services, followed by interment of her ashes will begin at 11am on June 26th at St Paul’s Episcopal Church. There will be a reception following at the church.
Arrangements entrusted to Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services Franklin-Strickland Chapel, 1724 McCallie Avenue, Chattanooga, TN, 37404, 423-265-4414.
