Charlie Ray, 80, of Ooltewah, Tennessee, peacefully entered into eternal rest during the late hours of July 31.
Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to the late Lee and Marie Ray, Charlie was a proud graduate of Brainerd High School, Class of 1964, and honorably served his country as a Vietnam veteran. A man of unwavering faith, he faithfully served for many years as a deacon at Covenant Presbyterian Church.
Charlie was the quintessential handyman and a beloved fixture in his community. There was not a road he did not know or a broken item he could not repair. He found great joy in fishing, but his greatest gift was his love for people. Whether meeting a lifelong friend or a stranger, Charlie never missed an opportunity to share a conversation, a story, or a smile. His kindness, generosity, and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Charlie is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Jeanie Ray; his brother, Warren Ray; his sons, Joshua Ray (Renee) and Caleb Ray (Brittany); his cherished grandchildren, Lane (Aniston Attaway), Tobias, and Lizzie Ray; his great-granddaughter, Oaklynn Ray; and a large extended family of nieces and nephews, including many who were not related by blood but lovingly knew him as “Uncle Charlie.”
The family will receive friends Friday, August 7, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church (8451 East Brainerd Rd., Chattanooga, TN 37421). The Celebration of Life service will begin at 6:00 p.m. with Pastor Bill Massey and Pastor Eric Mullinax officiating. Mr. Ray will be laid to rest privately at Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
In keeping with Charlie’s lifelong spirit of service, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Deaconate Fund at Covenant Presbyterian Church.
Arrangements are by the East Brainerd Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 8214 East Brainerd Rd., Chattanooga, TN 37421.
