Dorothy Jean Creek Buffington, lovingly known to many as “Nugene”, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, surrounded by the family she loved so dearly. She was 86 years old.
Born on June 26,1939, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Cecil and Francis Creek. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mike Buffington; her son, Ronnie Buffington; her sisters, Donna Mayes and Linda Watkins; and her brother, Aaron Creek.
Dorothy is survived by her devoted son, Danny Buffington and his wife, Brenda Buffington; her sister, Sue Boofer; her special brother-in-law, Jack Buffington; her grandchildren, Miranda (Manny) Crochet, Brandy (Graham) Hines, and Cale Buffington; and her treasured great-grandchildren, Ali Crochet, Kaden Crochet, Coley Crochet, Addie Hines, Hudson Hines, and honorary granddaughter, Sydney Crownover; along with many extended family members and dear friends. In recent years, she was lovingly cared for by the staff at Standifer Place. She was of the Jehovah’s Witness faith and was known for her strong convictions, unwavering determination, and generous spirit.
Anyone who knew Dorothy knew she was one of the feistiest women you could ever meet. She was a true “tell it like it is” kind of person, never one to sugarcoat her thoughts and never afraid to speak her mind. Her honesty was matched only by her sense of humor, and she had a way of making people laugh while letting them know exactly where they stood.
Her family was her greatest joy. While she deeply loved her children and grandchildren, there was something magical about the bond she shared with her great-grandchildren. They completely stole her heart. Even in her final days, she would brighten and become more alert when they entered the room. She knew each one by name, kept up with their lives, celebrated their accomplishments, and never missed an opportunity to tell others how proud she was of them.
Perhaps one of Dorothy’s greatest legacies is the family she helped build. Through her strength, love, determination, and resilience, she helped shape the lives of those who came after her. Her family is forever grateful for the example she set and for the role she played in raising a son whose character reflects so much of her own.
Dorothy’s life was a testament to resilience, loyalty, laughter, and love. She will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished by all who knew her.
