Obituary for James Leonard Denton James Leonard Denton, age 79, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on January 27, 2026. A lifelong resident of East Brainerd, James devoted his life to faith, family, service, and hard work.
He was employed at DuPont from 1965 until his retirement in 2001. James was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge, recently earning his 50-year certificate—an honor he cherished deeply. He was also a faithful member of Grace Bible Church, where he found tremendous joy, purpose, and community among his church family.
A man rooted firmly in his beliefs, he was an avid student of Scripture and a passionate believer in Rightly Dividing the Word. He never hesitated to share his faith with others and lived each day with conviction and humility. James honorably served his country in the United States Navy, a chapter of his life he carried with pride.
He is preceded in death by his father, Paul Denton Sr.; mother, Dorothy Holdiman; brother, Paul Denton Jr. of Maryville; and sister, Sheila Lynn of Cleveland.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Joyce Denton; his daughter, Jaime (Jason) Bingham; and his Sister, Brenda (Donnie) Howard; his brother, Larry (Karen) Denton; and his beloved grandson, Colton Harris, who brought him great joy.
Outside of his devotion to his family and faith, James found delight in simple pleasures. He loved flea marketing, yard sales, and spent years collecting Looney Tunes cookie jars—each one bringing out his playful, lighthearted spirit.
A Celebration of Life will be held on February 7, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Grace Bible Church, located at 3827 Hixson Pike, Chattanooga, TN 37415. Guests are invited to dress casually and gather in fellowship as we share stories, memories, and a meal together.
Mission BBQ will be catering, and anyone who wishes is welcome to bring a dessert or favorite dish. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice of Chattanooga, whose care and compassion were deeply appreciated.
James will be remembered for his gentle heart, unwavering faith, and the love he poured into every person blessed to know him. His legacy lives on in the family who adored him and in the many lives touched by his kindness and testimony.
