The daughter of Lola and James Alexander Greeson and sister of Virginia, Manilla graduated from Central High School in Chattanooga, and then from Erlanger Hospital‘s school of nursing. Manilla forged her own path in a time when doing so was not always easy. She broke cultural barriers when she married the late Dr. Iqbal Singh, her beloved husband of 63 years. Together, they built a life filled with love, adventure, and family, living in Pennsylvania, California, and Ohio while raising their son.
Manilla’s dedication to learning and achievement took her to California State University at Los Angeles, where she earned her BSN, and ultimately led her to the University of Michigan, where she earned a Master’s degree and then her PHD in 1978. She went on to a distinguished career in healthcare, serving as Vice President of Nursing at Flower Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. She balanced her professional accomplishments with her devotion to her family, embodying both determination and compassion.
In retirement, Manilla returned to her Tennessee roots, settling in Ooltewah among beloved cousins and reconnecting with the place and people that had always been part of her story.
She is lovingly remembered by her son, Jim Singh, and his wife, Elisabeth; her grandchildren, Alexandra, Christoph, and Barbara; and her great-grandchildren, Charlie and Emi. Her life touched generations, and her strength, curiosity, and love for family will continue to inspire those who knew her.
After 93 years, Manilla leaves behind a legacy of achievement, courage, and enduring family bonds. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
A celebration of Manilla’s life will be held on Saturday, October 24th at 9.00 a.m. at St. Stephen Catholic Church at 7111 Lee Highway, Chattanooga TN 37421 with Father Mauel Perez officiating.
