She had been a resident of Chattanooga most of her life except for living in Roanoke, Virginia a few years as a child, 4 years in Las Vegas, Nevada 1979-1983 then Atlanta, Georgia from 1983-1996 before returning to Chattanooga.
She was preceded in death by her parents Mary Louise and Med D. Bacon, her sister Carolyn Elder and her husband, William S. “Andy” Hagan and also a nephew, Paige Elder. She is survived by daughters Mary Anne Jones (Paul), Madeline Belcher (Robert), and Amanda Morgan and sister in law, Patricia Sanders. She was known as Grammy by her seven grandchildren Rachel Swanger, Abby Swanger, Olivia LePage, Katie Belcher, Andrew Belcher, Billy Morgan, and Elizabeth Jones and two great grandchildren Collette Evans and Charlotte LePage and nephew, David Elder.
Susanne was a cheerleader at Tyner High School and graduated in 1957. She went to Tennessee Tech to pursue a degree in education. It is there she met Andy and they were married September 12, 1959 and started their family.
After her children were all in elementary school, she began to volunteer then became a teacher assistant at Barger Elementary and Brainerd Junior High in the Chattanooga City Schools. She taught at a daycare in Las Vegas then Appletree and Decatur First Baptist daycares in Atlanta. Upon returning to Chattanooga, they joined Brainerd Baptist Church, and she was a paid nursery worker and teacher in their Mom’s Day program. She loved children and babies and she taught so many including her own younger cousins, children, grandchildren, nephews, and friend's kids.
Mom taught us the importance of reading and reading our Bible and the blessing God is Great, God is Good. She took us to Sunday school and church. Mom/Grammy gave her children and grandchildren a love for pickles especially Claussen pickles and her potato salad which is made every year at Easter and will continue to be in her memory.
She loved to talk and be with friends and family and she had a way with words, and some sayings we will always remember and quote. She had many friends who loved her dearly, and she will be missed by them as well as all her family. We find so much comfort in our hope of heaven because of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and we know Mom is with Jesus in paradise and had a glorious reunion with Mimi, Pop, Carolyn, Daddy and so many others who have passed before her.
We want to thank her caregivers at Soddy Daisy Health Care, and the different hospice staff from Hospice of Chattanooga, Amedysis and Hearth who have cared for Mom over the past 5 years. We appreciate them so very much.
