Robert leaves Barbara, his wife of 38 years; his son, Carl Junior (Michelle) Phillips of North Carolina, and step-children: Jacqueline (William) Palmatier of Crown Point, Indiana; Judy (Joe) Herman of Flintstone, Georgia; William Welch of Sterling Heights, Michigan; Troy Welch of Wasilla, Alaska. He also leaves two grandchildren, eleven step grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. In-laws include Con (Marilyn) Idleman, Kenneth (Kaylene) Idleman, David (Anita) Idleman, and mother-in-law, Lois Idleman. Robert was preceded in death by his father Carl, his mother Donavieve and two brothers, William Benton and Carl Phillips.
Robert and his wife relocated to Rossville, Georgia two years after his retirement from Webber Trucking Company in 2010.
With a servant's heart as a well-loved deacon of Hickory Valley Christian Church, he helped serve meals at their Wednesday night Fellowship dinners.
With pride in caring for his home and yard, Robert connected with his neighbors. He served on the board of their neighborhood association.
Everyone knew of Robert's outgoing, personable, and friendly way with both the young and old. He had a natural ability to make people feel comfortable, whether they knew him for years, or met him for the first time. He was known by his loud laughter and cheering on his favorite football team, Michigan.
Robert lived a people-centered life with regular activities of playing pool at East Gate Senior Center along with socializing and supporting his wife's Lowrey organ-playing group.
His big smile and genuine interest in others distinguished Robert as bigger than life. He loved his Lord, his family, his church, and fellow man. God created a special and remarkable human being. He leaves a huge gap in those of us who knew him.
