He was born August 30, 1943, in Chattanooga, TN to the late Clara Mae (Chambers) and Robert Hubert Gaston, Sr.
Sam was a United States Vietnam Staff Sergeant Veteran. He received various medals including a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, and an Air Medal. He was the former owner and operator of Dr. Quik-Fix Windshield Repair.
After his time in the Army, Sam was the founder and Pastor of Watson Chapel in Byhalia, Mississippi where he served for seven years. He pastored several other churches in Mississippi and Georgia. He attended Pathway Baptist Church in Apison, TN at the time of his death.
Sam was an avid golfer, winning many tournaments throughout the years. He was also a staunch supporter and fan of the University of Georgia Bulldogs. “Go Dawgs!”
In addition to his parents, his daughter, Carmen Deanna Gaston; his siblings, Edna Franks, Debbie Pilato, Deetta Rosato, Eunice Jackson, Charles Gaston and Junior Gaston; as well as several nieces and nephews, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his loving wife of 35 years, Lorene Rogers Allen Gaston; his children John (DeLynn) Gaston of Summerville, GA, Sam (Elaine) Gaston of West Hartford, CT, Anthony Gaston of Clearwater, FL, Rhonda (Robert) Schrader of Ringgold, GA, and Todd (Diane) Allen of Apison, TN; his grandchildren, who affectionately adored him as “Pa”, Dillon Gaston, Cage Gaston, Troy (Hailey) Gaston, Reagan (Cameron) Greenwood, Merrin (Peyton) Terry, Mackenzie Allen, Madison Allen, McKlaine Allen, Christopher Gaston, and James Gaston; his great-grandchildren, Pruitt “PJ” Greenwood, Paxton Greenwood, Oaklynn Allen, Remington Allen, Sadie-Grace Gaston, Autumn Doyle, Leilah Gaston, and Taytum Gaston; his brother Kenneth Gaston of Dalton, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 17, 2026, from 5-8 PM and Wednesday, February 18, 2026, from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM at the funeral home. Funeral services will begin at 12:00 PM in the East Brainerd Chapel with Rev. Mark Smith and Rev. Robert K. Schrader officiating.
In fulfilling his request, Sam will be laid to rest at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Military Funeral Honors. His grandsons Dillon Gaston, Cage Gaston, Cameron Greenwood, Peyton Terry, Justin Grossarth, and Zach Brown will serve as active pallbearers. His great-grandsons Pruitt “PJ” Greenwood, Paxton Greenwood, and Remington Allen will serve as honorary pallbearers while wearing “Pa’s” beloved Georgia Bulldogs colors, red, black & white.
