On February 6, 2023, Shawnee Dippel Douglas, loving mother of two and lifelong educator, passed away at the age of 72 following a six year battle with cancer.
Born to Christopher and Vivian Coleen Dippel, Shawnee attended Graceland University earning a degree in Elementary Education. She then attended the University of Kansas and received a Master’s degree in Special Education. Later, she completed an EDS in curriculum and instruction from Lincoln Memorial University.
Shawnee truly loved teaching and she particularly enjoyed teaching students with disabilities. It was her mission that every child feel important and valued. An avid reader herself, Shawnee delighted in teaching children to read. She was known for her vast personal library from which she generously loaned books to children and anyone looking to escape into the pages of a good story. Shawnee was loved by her students and respected by her colleagues.
Shawnee will be remembered for her kindness, strong work ethic and willingness to help others. Because of these traits, she made an impact on many students, her community and her family. Her family will miss her famous cinnamon rolls, french toast, and conversations on current events.
She is survived by her daughters, Amber Douglas of Chattanooga and Ashley Johnson (Joel) of Knoxville; grandchildren, Vivian Rose, Clara, Everett and George Johnson; brothers, Martin Dippel and Christopher Dippel Jr. of LaFollette, TN.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 25, 2023 the East Brainerd Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
