He was born in Woodland, Alabama to the late Hugh and Minnie Pearl Hester. He was proceeded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Hazel Hester and 10 siblings, Tom, Omie, Clyde, Macie, Moody, MaryAnn, James, Wilma, Wallace and Betty.
Willis was a proud graduate of Berry College, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Arts. During his time at Berry, he worked as a barber and grounds keeper. Right after graduation, he was hired by the USGS (US Geological Survey Department) in the water resource division, where he worked for the next 40 years. During that time, he was also drafted into the Amy Reserves as an x-ray technologist.
Willis was a long-time resident in Stone Mountain, Georgia and member of the Belvedere SDA Church. During this time, he was head deacon for over 20 years, served on the school board and church board, helped with Pathfinders, sang in the choir, and took pride in taking care of the church landscape. After retirement, he and his wife made the move to Ringgold, Georgia where they became a member of Chattanooga First SDA Church, continuing to serve as deacon and a proud member of the choir.
Willis loved gardening, bird watching, traveling, photography, joking around and making people laugh. You could often find him at prayer meeting on Tuesday mornings, at the “Bubba Brunch” every Thursday morning, and sharing momma’s pancakes with his dear friends Bob and Bonnie every Sunday morning at Cracker Barrel. Willis was blessed to have a strong circle of good friends, but his dearest love was for his family, especially his daughter, and being Pop to his granddaughters and his great-grandson.
Willis was a godly man, who lived his life to the fullest. To know him was to love him. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his daughter, Laura (Burt) Harris, granddaughters, Amanda (Jacob) Darsey, Emily (Blake) Easley, great-grandson, Wilder J, brother, John Morgan Hester and many dearly loved nieces, and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm and after the service on Sunday, June 1, 2025 at Chattanooga First SDA Church, 7450 Standifer Gap Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421. A celebration of life service will follow at 1:30 pm in the church with Pastor Fred Fuller officiating.
