

Betty W. Smith, age 88, passed away Sept. 24, 2010, at Anna Maria of Aurora. Born Aug. 12, 1922, in Cleveland, she was a six-year resident of Aurora, a former resident of Chardon for six years and lived in Russell Township for 28 years. Betty was a graduate of Collinwood High School. She later attended Dyke Business College and became a legal secretary. A parishioner of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Chardon, she was one of the founding members and past president of Christ Child, Geauga Chapter, and an advisor with the Four County Advisory Council on Aging. She was the 2002 Geauga County Senior Citizen of the Year and was a volunteer with the Chardon Senior Center and Birthright. She was on the board of directors of Women's Safe and was awarded the 1988 United Way Ruth Nemec Award and the 1995 Christ Child, Geauga Chapter, Mary Virginia Merrick Award. She also enjoyed playing bridge and poker with her friends. Survivors include her son, Mark (Teresa) of Long Beach, Calif.; daughters, Leslie (Ed) Cade of South Euclid and Stacey Corlett of Chester Township; grandchildren, Amy Smith, Kalyn Smith, Julia Smith, Zachary Solotko, Catherine Cade, Victoria "Alex" Cade, Shannon Corlett, and Shelby Corlett; and great-grandchildren, Sasha and Sebastian Solotko. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack F. and parents, Martha (Briden) and Forrest Wilson. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Gattozzi and Son Funeral Home, 12524 Chillicothe Road, Chester Township. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 401 North St., Chardon (please meet at the church). The officiant will be the Rev. Thomas Gilles. Inurnment will be held at a later date in All Souls Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Betty's name may be made to Christ Child Society of Geauga Co., P.O. Box 1133, Chardon, OH 44024 or to Crossroads Hospice, 9775 Rockside Road, Ste. 270, Valley View, OH 44125.
