Dominic Anthony Mongiardo, age 92, of Chesterland, Ohio, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2026. Dominic was born in Italy on September 26, 1933, and moved to Canton, Ohio when he was four years old. Dominic became a U.S. citizen and served in the U.S. Army. He attended Kent State University and John Carroll University. Dominic was a teacher and then, for over 20 years, the principal of Wickliffe Elementary School where he was affectionately known as Mr. M. Upon retiring from Wickliffe, he missed his students so much that he became a children’s librarian at Willoughby Eastlake Library. Dominic was a proud member of the Italian American Club and a faithful parishioner of St. Mary Magdalene Church in Willowick.
Dominic loved to talk and laugh, always ready with a joke or a yo-yo trick to entertain those around him. He enjoyed playing cards, trips to the casino, and especially making his delicious spaghetti sauce and meatballs, a family favorite that brought everyone together around the table.
Dominic is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ida, and their son, Christopher; and his sisters, Teresa (Vincent) Nestico, and Marianna (Bruno) Pitingolo, and his dear nephew, Joseph Nestico. He is survived by his partner of over 40 years, Bonnie Weiss, and her daughter Wendy (Jamey) Asher and their children, Ralph and Rosie; his granddaughter, Isabella (Griffen) Johnson, and his four great-grandchildren, Gio, Donny, Alex, and Whitney Dominique; his niece Marian (Nicholas, deceased) Doljac, his nephew Robert (Patricia) Pitingolo, and his niece Carol (Joseph, deceased) Pitingolo; his devoted cousin Frank Cosentino; and by many great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, former students, and friends.
While Dominic will be greatly missed, there is much comfort in knowing that he lived a full and rewarding life, and his spirit will live on with his big Italian family, and the many, many people who loved him. The family would like to express appreciation to the staff of Ohman Family Living at Holly for their kindness and care this past year.
