A proud Army veteran, Gus served on active duty from May 16, 1951, to April 25, 1953, and continued in the Army Reserve until his honorable discharge on February 26, 1957. He was stationed with Company C, 33rd Infantry at Fort Kobbe in the Panama Canal Zone, where he served his country with quiet dignity and honor.
Gus was a lifelong plumber and member of Plumbers Local 55, working in the trade for over 65 years. Known to many as the neighborhood handyman, he was always ready with a tool in hand and a helping heart. If you needed it, Gus probably had it — his collection of tools was unmatched, and his John Deere tractors and golf cart were among his most prized possessions.
A passionate Cleveland sports fan, Gus especially loved baseball. Whether it was rooting for the Guardians or chatting about the latest game, his enthusiasm never wavered.
Gus’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. He was a dedicated member of St. Helen Catholic Church in Newbury, singing in the choir for many years and volunteering at every opportunity. From fish fries to clambakes, Gus could always be found lending a hand and a warm smile.
One of the greatest joys of Gus’s life was his deep and abiding love for Jean. Together for over 35 years, their relationship was a beautiful example of partnership and devotion. Through their union, Gus gained a son and daughter, as well as cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately referred to him as "GG" (Grandpa Gus).
To know Gus was to know a sweet, gentle soul. His kindness was boundless, and his quiet strength was the foundation of his family. He will be remembered for his warm heart, his love for his community, his tireless work ethic, and above all, the profound love he had for those closest to him.
He was the dear brother of Lillian Kochis and brother-in-law of Harry Hackett. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Helene (nee Mason), cherished partner Jean Hickey, parents Gottlieb Gleske and Emma Gleske (nee Netzel) and the following siblings: Elsie Rychak, Bertha Dudley, Alma Gleske, Eleanor Mandau, George Gleske, and Gladys Hackett. He will be missed by his many nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and neighbors.
