He was born in Lorretto, PA, on Sept 7, 1931 to Elwood J and Stella (Rudolph) Ivory. One of 14 children, he left school in 1949 to enlist in the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Missouri and USS Salem.. After his honorable discharge in 1953, he eventually moved to Cleveland, and found work at Towmotor. Mary Arlene Sutton had also relocated from Cresson, PA to Cleveland with her mother and step-father. On June 30, 1956, they were wed at St Joseph Church in Collinwood. They started a family and moved to Eastlake, and then Leroy Twp. Upon retiring from Caterpillar in 1985, he moved to Concord and started Big Trophy Wilderness Adventures with his brother Ron. After living in Florida for several years, he returned to Cresson, designing and building a lakeside home with the help of his son Donald. They later returned to northeast Ohio and settled in Madison.
Known as Hal, H.J. or Uncle Sonny, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, golf, bowling and working with wood. He was not afraid of using a hammer or saw. In addition to building a home in Cresson Lakes, he remodeled the house in Eastlake and added a breezeway and addition to the Leroy Twp. home. He designed and built a slide-out car-top camper for the roof of their station wagon. A creative problem solver, he could shield an entire campsite from inclement weather with a roll of visqueen, a bag of marbles and a spool of twine. He was a parishioner at Immaculate Conception Church in Madison. His service to our country entitled him to membership in the American Legion, most recently Post 112 in Madison.
He was preceded in death by sons Donald and Gary (Carol) Ivory. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, sons Jeffrey (Anna) and John (Marion) Ivory, and grandson Chris Ivory.
