He devoted 30 years of service to the Euclid City School District, beginning his career as a teacher and later serving as a school administrator. After retiring, he continued to share his leadership and dedication at Cleveland State University, where he worked as a supervisor for student teachers, an additional 14 years.
Rich is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Karen (née Vatty); his daughters, Tracie Kacir, Kelly Novy (Jeff), and Mary; and his son, David (Tamara). He was a proud and loving grandfather to seven grandchildren — Alex, Emily, Megan, Ryan, Kyle, Brady, and Tyler — who brought him endless joy. He is also survived by his brothers, Donald and Mark, and his sister, Nancy Spelich.
Rich enjoyed coaching baseball and softball, bowling, golfing, caring for his yard, vacationing on Hilton Head Island, and spending time with family and friends. He especially loved dancing and listening to polka music, often starting his mornings with a lively tune playing in the background.
He took great pride in his ever-growing rock collection, which included fossils, crystals, geodes, minerals, and pieces of petrified wood. He also had a deep appreciation for the night sky and a lifelong interest in stargazing and astronomy. A devoted fan of the Cleveland Indians/Guardians, Rich rarely missed a game and even enjoyed rewatching them during the off-season. Opening Day was always a highlight, marking the hopeful beginning of another baseball season.
Above all, Rich was an easygoing, loving, and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be fondly remembered as the family's official "breakfast pancake chef," during sleepovers with his grandchildren.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no funeral or visiting hours. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
