Alejandrina Segovia, age 90, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on September 4, 2024, in Chicago, Illinois. She was born in Villa González Ortega (Hacienda El Carro), Zacatecas, Mexico, on October 2, 1933, and immigrated to Chicago in August of 1974.

Dearly known as ‘Mama Leja’ to many, she was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt who found her greatest joy and pride in her family. Her kindness extended beyond her family and work, as she was known for always offering a helping hand to those in need, whether through acts of charity or personal generosity. She leaves a legacy of love, compassion, and strength to all who knew her.

She poured her heart and strength into everything she did. In Mexico, she owned La Estrella Convenience Store and partnered with her husband, Victor, in managing the family’s farmlands. Later, in Chicago, she worked for many years at Brach's Suchard Candy Company and also spent time as a sales representative for Queen’s Way Fashion.

Alejandrina showed her devotion to her family in many ways, including hosting family get-togethers with her cherished traditional Mexican dishes and making holidays extra special with gifts stacked taller than the Christmas tree—giving made her truly happy.

She had a lifelong passion for music and movies. She enjoyed classic Westerns and admired stars such as John Wayne and Pedro Infante. She was especially fond of the timeless songs of artists like Los Panchos, Agustín Lara, and Javier Solis. Her love for music began as a child when she learned to play the mandolin and piano; she also participated in her church choir. Coming from a line of educators, including her mother, she always wanted to share her knowledge of God’s teachings, how to read musical notes, and the rules and origins of the Spanish language.

Her unwavering faith guided her throughout her life, and she remained a devoted member of churches both in Chicago and in Mexico, including Our Lady of Mercy, Saint Francis of Assisi, Catedral Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, and Iglesia de Santa Teresa. Alejandrina was also committed to charitable causes and contributed to her community through donations, support, and care for others, exemplifying her belief in giving back to those less fortunate.

Alejandrina was preceded in death by her loving husband, Víctor M. Segovia; her parents, Herminia Ríos and Adolfo Ibarra; and her siblings, Jesús, Avelino, and Guillermina Ibarra. She leaves behind a devoted and loving family: her children, Víctor (Marta) Segovia, Irene (Jaime) Pérez, Adriana (Ignacio) Dávila, Lourdes (Juan) Pacheco, Rosario (Alberto) Ferral, Alejandrina Segovia, and Claudia Segovia. She will also be deeply missed by her grandchildren (Martha, Adriana, Jaime, Valeria, Jonathan, Viviana, Victoria, Mike, Alberto, and Jacob) and great-grandchildren (Crystal, Isaiah, Noah, Nyah, Sofia, Isabella, and Clarissa), along with her extended family, who will remember her with love and admiration.

A funeral service will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Chicago, and she will then be laid to rest at Maryhill Cemetery in Niles, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alejandrina’s memory to Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, the American Diabetes Association, or the American Heart Association as a tribute to her legacy of kindness, strength, and faith.

Conocida cariñosamente como ‘Mama Leja’ por muchos, fue una querida madre, abuela, bisabuela y tía, quien encontró su mayor alegría y orgullo en su familia. Su amabilidad se extendía más allá de su familia y trabajo, ya que era conocida por siempre ofrecer una mano amiga a los necesitados, ya sea a través de actos de caridad o generosidad personal. Deja un legado de amor, compasión y fortaleza para todos los que la conocieron.

Dedicó su corazón y fortaleza a todo lo que hacía. En México, fue propietaria de la tienda La Estrella y trabajó junto a su esposo, Víctor, en la gestión de las tierras agrícolas de la familia.
