So sorry to hear of Art's passing. He was a really nice man. Always looked dapper. Was a fine writer in his own right and a thoughtful editor of other people's work. Condolences to his family.



Art, was an absolute peach of a guy.    He gave me my first break in the publishing business when he agreed to work with me on my first published book - The American Library Association's  Book Buyers Guide ...

I loved Art's humor, and of course, his wit and charm.  I also fondly recall Art and Mary's loving relationship and the gorgeous city garden they nurtured and shared.

Art and I went to Columbia together.  We both  had a bit less patience than we should have for the content of some of our coursework at library school.  So, we’d escape to the lawn in front of Butler Library and just sit and talk about the world.  About books.  About the future we hoped for.  

Art actually helped me survive library school. His humor and  stories countered the crazy world of 1965-1966.  We even made it through the  great NYC blackout with a group of us siting in the West End Bar right after we escaped from the sixth floor classroom  in the midst of an exam holding lighted matches while negotiating a. very dark stairway.
