With profound sadness we announce the passing of our beloved, Arturo, on June 29, 2024. He left in peace surrounded by his loving wife, siblings, children, grandchildren, and family. He was born on May 19, 1946, in San Juan Rizal, Manila, Philippines. He was the second eldest son of the late McWain and Leoncia Galdo.
Arturo and Melba married on June 24, 1967. For the past 57 years, they grew together and cultivated an extraordinary, beautiful marriage. They built a life in Chicago, far from the Mauban province where they first met. They raised four children: McArthur, Belinda, Carla, and Dorothea and provided them with unimaginable opportunities. With open arms they welcomed their children’s partners: Clarice, Joe, Theo, and Volney. They helped raise their six grandchildren: Sheila, Anthony, Morgan, CJ, Kyla, and Sonny, and their two great grandchildren: Tony and Isaiah.
Arturo was most proud of his family. He enjoyed the chaos of laughter, backyard shenanigans, karaoke/game nights, and family dinners. He also found comfort in individual conversations with his kids, or quietly watching movies together. Often, he would say how blessed he felt to have a large close-knit family.
Arturo’s gift was his ability to make anyone feel seen and special. He was sincere when he asked someone how their day was going, and prayed that the people around him were blessed with peace. He called his family and friends, usually multiple times a day, to say, “hello” and that he loved you.
Arturo courageously defeated several health setbacks throughout his life. He was an 18 year kidney cancer survivor. He passed away with dignity and in an abundance of love, after heroically fighting lung cancer.
He is survived by his wife, children and their spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren; brother, McWain “Jun” Galdo and his wife, Patricia; sister, Nancy Walber; brother, Robert Galdo and his wife, Miriam; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. We all miss him dearly.
He is greeted and joined in Heaven by, his parents; sister, Lilia Jaraplasan, and her husband, Romy; brother, Albert Galdo; father-in-law, Emilio Nivadura; sisters-in-law, Rosalina, Myrna, and Ining Nivadura; brother-in-law, Godfrey Nivadura; his granddaughter, Evangeline Rouse; his cat, Marbles; his dog, Brownie; and dear friends whom have also passed away.
A memorial mass for Arturo is scheduled for Friday, July 12, 2024, at 10AM at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 5545 N Paulina St., Chicago, IL 60640. Friends and family will then gather for a visitation from 12-4PM at Drake and Son Funeral Home, 5303 N. Western Ave., Chicago, IL., 60625.
