Claudio M. Cabe was born on February 18th, 1932, in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, the Philippines, to Lorenzo and Agustina Cabe. Despite his childhood being marked by such events as World War II, he often reminisced about growing up in the barrio, including how he was one of the few children to have a bicycle in his hometown and playing with his four siblings, Jose, Francisca, Concepcion, and Juanito.
While initially intending to study law, he graduated from medical school at the prestigious University of Santo Tomas in Metro Manila, the Philippines. His studies eventually took him to the United States, where he trained and taught at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York. Eventually, he joined Munster Community Hospital, even becoming head of anesthesiology at one point, in Munster, Indiana, before retiring. There, he became a pillar of the community, even being recognized long after retirement by the proprietors of beloved local restaurant, Munster’s Gyros, as “Doc” when he visited one day with his grandchildren.
Claudio is survived by his wife, Attorney Emperatriz Cabatu, of 66 years; his four children, Lorenzo, Ramon, Emmanuel, and Claudine, and their spouses, Annabelle, Ma. Theresa, and Patrick; his six grandchildren, Anna, Marc, Pauline, Marielle, Lorenz, and Lauren, and Marc’s wife Lauren; his two surviving siblings Jose and Francisca; and many cousins, nephews, nieces, and other relatives. He will be remembered fondly for having a sharp sense of style which included fedoras and clothes he ironed himself; his love of dancing, ABBA, Perry Como, Julio Iglesias, and Michael Bublé; his passion for gardening, especially at his beloved beach house in New Buffalo, Michigan; his strong Catholic faith, as marked by visits to the Vatican, the Holy Land, and other religious landmarks and his long support of Mundelein Seminary; and his generosity towards loved ones, especially when it came to hosting elaborate meals of steak, lobster, sushi, and lamb chops.
Friends and family will gather for a visitation that will be held on Friday April 14th, 2023 from 9 am – 10 am at Drake and Son Funeral Home, 5303 North Western Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60625. A funeral service will start at 10 am at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow the service at Rosehill Cemetery, 5800 North Ravenswood Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60660.
