Daniel Scott Miltner, 46, of Chicago, died on March 25, 2014. He was the beloved husband of Kerri McClimen; devoted father of Aidan McClimen Miltner and Vivian Jo McClimen Miltner; loving son of the Rev. Roy and Freda Miltner, née Ammon; cherished son-in-law of Gary and Nancy McClimen, née McDonald; dear brother of Steve (Mary Ryder) Miltner of Denver; treasured brother-in-law of Kristin Bell and Betsy McClimen; engaging uncle of Kenna, Frankie and Charlie Bell; precious family member to numerous cousins, aunts and uncles; and a true and trusted friend to many.

Born in Trenton, N.J., on February 23, 1968, Dan lived in Colorado Springs until his family moved to Des Moines, Iowa, when he was in 5th grade. Dan was educated in Iowa (Samuelson Elementary School and Hoover High School) and earned his Bachelor of Science degree at University of Iowa and his master’s degree and Ph.D. at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).

Dan and his wife, Kerri, met in junior high and were dear friends before dating and marrying in 1993. “Soul mates” and “destined for each other” are words often used to describe their love. They were best friends and made their own fun, no matter the circumstances. Avid travelers, they covered much of the world together and enjoyed every minute.

Dan was a clinical assistant professor in Mathematics Education, with a joint appointment between the College of Education and Mathematics Department at University of Illinois at Chicago.

His life’s work reflected his deep passion and commitment to helping students and teachers look at mathematics education in a unique manner. His creed was to “have an impact on every student I teach.” Before UIC, Dan was a math teacher at Good Counsel High School in Silver Spring, Md. An article in the Good Counsel Falcon News described him as playing “many different roles in the school community: teacher, coach, friend and counselor. Mr. Miltner is a student favorite and one of the best-known teachers in the school.”

He joined UIC in 1996, and his teaching record was highly impressive. In 2011 and 2012, he received the Silver Circle Award for Excellence in Teaching, an award selected each year by graduating seniors to recognize UIC’s best teachers. In 2007, he won the Teaching Recognition Award from the Council on Teaching and Learning, which recognizes the documented excellence of UIC faculty in their teaching activities.

It has been a sad day to learn of Danny's passing. I spent the cold winters in Iowa looking forward to attending Lutheran Lakeside every summer. Roy and Freda were like parents away from home and their presence at camp was priceless. Then I got the opportunity to go on a trip to the boundary waters with Danny. He was a huge role model and a reason I too became an LLC counselor one day. I will never forget the time I got to spend a Saturday with him waiting to get picked up from camp while he worked on his car. I even remember him bragging he got 52 miles a gallon in some incredible wind on a trip to Iowa City. A letter I read tonight was from a song we sang often at camp. It only takes a spark to get a fire going, and soon all those around can warm up in its glowing... Danny was a spark.

Our families hearts were sadden to hear of your loss! Ryan, Stephanie and I have some great memories of Danny. He was always so warm and attentive to the campers and Lakeside. His smile lit every room he walked into. Ryan shared with me last night his mremories of going to the Boundary Waters with Dan. Of course Stephanie (and all the other little girls at Camp) had a crush on Danny. Personally, I remember Danny being supportive of everyone and still can hear the laughter and cheering in our living room when Steve had the guys up to watch the NBA playoffs.

Praising God that we were blessed to know the entire Miltner family and thanking God for what Danny brought into so many lives. Heartfelt sympathy to all of you. Kerry I started walking the path your on 23 years ago after Steve died and I know there are some valleys you will go into but the peaks get easier to climb.

Love and Prayers for all of you.

Missing you Dan. Outside SEO they have landscaped it beautifully. Every time I walk through this new beautiful space I think of how much I miss you and wish you were here. Wishing I could sit on a bench with you planning our classes together and talk about math and our kids.

Dear Family and Friends of Dan,

I just learned of this terrible loss and wanted to reach out to send love your way. I was a student of Dan's at UIC, and he is the reason I am a middle school math teacher. He awakened a passion in me for teaching math conceptually to students in ways that allowed even the most reluctant learners to develop confidence and skill in a typically feared subject. His enthusiasm and genuine kindness were life-changing for me, and his absence in the education world is an irreplaceable loss.

May you find peace and comfort in the wonderful memories you shared.

Danny and his brother Steve grew up right behind us in Des Moines, so my brother and I spent a lot of time playing football, basketball and baseball with the Miltner boys. Their backyard was known as "Milt-ropolitan Stadium" and it hosted so many fun times. I'll always remember Danny cracking us up with his play-by-play announcements as he stole the ball and ran around the defense for a touchdown.
Very sad and very sorry and just wanted pass on our deepest sympathy to Kerri, the kids, Steve, Roy & Frieda. Please hug each other for us.
