
Edward Cummings, age 90, died Dec. 27. Born in Chicago, IL, Edward attended the Latin School of Chicago, Hotchkiss School in Connecticut and Yale University, and then joined the US Navy in 1942. After World War II, Mr. Cummings returned to Chicago and joined the Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Company of Chicago, where he rose to Executive Vice President and head of all commercial lending, domestic and international. Mr. Cummings was a former trustee of the Art Institute of Chicago, DePaul University and the Newberry Library. Mr. Cummings is survived by his wife, Helen (de Marcellus) Cummings, and his eight children, Henry, Amory, Lawrence, Lillian Stevenson, Ogden, Rose, Alexander and McLean. Mr. Cummings had 20 grandchildren. Mr. Cummings was the son of Walter J. Cummings, who was Chairman of the Board of the Continental Bank and the first Chairman of the Federal Insurance Deposit Corporation. One of Edward's brothers was the late Walter J. Cummings, Jr., former Solicitor General of United States and then a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals, 7th Circuit. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Cathedral, Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, 9:30 a.m. with the interment at Calvary Cemetery in Evanston.
