Eileen Jane Casey, affectionately known as “Neenee”, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, September 20, 2020, in the company of her family. She was 86 years old. She was the youngest daughter of the late Peter and Margaret Keane, and was preceded in death by her sisters Anne (Marvin) Gottlieb and Margaret (Eugene) Dyker.
She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, John, her children John (Susan), Margaret (Paul) Slade, Thomas (Lynne), Martin (Tracy), Kathleen (Michael) Curran, and Daniel (Liliana), as well as her grandchildren, Matthew, Michael, Kevin, Patrick, Megan, Fiona, Ryan, Catherine, Gwen, Lily, Charlie, Cara, Henry, Casey, and William, and her extended family of nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws, and friends who she loved dearly.
Eileen was born in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago and lived in this community her entire life. She made lifelong friends at St. Ita’s elementary school, Immaculata High School, and the Columbus Hospital School of Nursing, where she graduated from in 1955. Nursing came naturally to Eileen. She found immense joy in helping others and touched the lives of many with her warm heart and caring hands.
In 1941, Eileen’s parents purchased a home within the parish of St. Gregory the Great Church. It became her faith community for almost 80 years. Faith, family, friendship (and food!) were the essentials of life and gave her much fulfillment. All who knew her will remember her sense of humor, her love of family, friends, her generosity, her passion for bingo, and her deep faith.
Being with others was a tremendous source of joy for Eileen - she could talk with anyone and make them feel welcome. Opportunities to share stories and always a laugh over a meal, a cup of tea, or on the phone were the true moments of life for her. She could find hope in even the most challenging of times. The kettle was always on, and her smile was always ready. As she leaves us now to reunite with those who have gone before her, we pray that we may continue to live in her spirit, with love and a smile for all.
