Elaine Werges, known to many as Yia Yia, Dolly, or Aunt Dolly, peacefully left this world on October 28, 2026, at the age of 90. She leaves behind a lifetime of cherished memories, beloved traditions, and a family who will forever be grateful for her love, strength, and spirit.
Born on October 4, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, Elaine was the youngest of six children born to William and Aphrodite (Alice) Simos. She grew up alongside her siblings George, Angelikula (Ann), John, Andronica (Nickie), and her twin brother, Michael (Mike).
Elaine was a devoted mother to her two daughters, Joyce and Diane, whom she raised with love, determination, and an appreciation for hard work and education.
Over the years, her strong work ethic and adventurous spirit took her across the country, combining her natural gift for connecting with people with her love of travel. Whether she was spending her summers as a camp counselor, working at the Boys & Girls Club, or mentoring students at Chicago State University, she dedicated herself to helping others. She went on to become the first female National Sales Manager for Kronos Foods, and later served as Vice President of Sales. Elaine was a trailblazer, and a woman truly ahead of her time.
A gifted cook and gracious host, Elaine knew how to make everyone feel welcome. Together with her beloved sister Ann, she hosted many holiday celebrations, preparing elaborate meals and Greek pastries, filling the evenings with music, singing, storytelling, games, laughter, and most of all, a special toast to honor every occasion.
Elaine was a proud Chicagoan who cherished her Greek heritage. She attended Koraes Greek School and was a lifelong member of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. She also had a love for sports, music, theatre, and a good game of cards. She especially enjoyed sharing these experiences with her grandchildren—whom she would regularly beat in a competitive game of 500 Rummy, even in her later years.
