Grecia Maria Adames Mateo

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Grecia Maria Adames Mateo on Thursday, August 13. A cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and teacher to many in the U.S. and her native Dominican Republic— Grecia was a blessing and shining light to all those who knew and loved her.

Born in San Juan de la Maguana in the Dominican Republic, Grecia was the youngest of seven close-knit brothers and sisters. Grecia adored her siblings and her mom and served as a second mom to many nieces and nephews, raising four of them as her own. A devoted Catholic, she studied to become a nun but God had other plans when she met Israel Mateo (or “Mateo” as she always called him), whom she would go on to be married to for 43 years and loved fiercely to her last day.

Grecia and Israel had two daughters 11 months apart. Grecia was an extraordinary mami whose unconditional love and powerful example will forever shape her daughters, who thank God every day for the honor of being Grecia’s hijas. Perhaps Grecia’s most cherished role was that of devoted abuelita to her four grandchildren who she treasured (and spoiled) beyond measure.

La Profesora Adames, as she was known in the Dominican Republic, was a gifted and devoted teacher who touched many lives, and she never stopped being a teacher at heart.

Her innate warmth and kindness, unshakeable faith and zest for life defined her. Grecia’s vibrant personality (not to mention fashion sense) was unforgettable—her laugh was contagious and her generosity and genuineness made many people feel instantly at home with her.

Grecia wasn’t afraid to tell the truth and she never wavered from her moral compass. Throughout her life, she demonstrated impressive strength and bravery, from the courage it takes to start over as an immigrant in a new country—trading a profession she loved to work as a housekeeper at a hotel to help provide for her daughters—to beating pancreatic cancer in her late 70s against all odds. No matter the challenge, her faith and love of family helped her persevere.

Grecia is survived by her husband, Israel; daughters Gray and Darhiana; and their spouses who she loved as her own, Chris and Eric; grandchildren Alessandra, Lyanna, Julian and Mirielle; and brother, Conrado; along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Magino, (who died when she was very young) and her beloved mom, Rogelia, and dear siblings Sofia, Altagracia, Cuco (Bienvenido), Francisco (Gully) and Servio.

Grecia was loved beyond words and her family and friends will forever cherish her memory and the mark she’s left on all of our hearts and lives. May she smile down on us from heaven, rejoicing with God and her late loved ones, until we meet again.

Visitation will take place on Friday, August 21 from 4-8 p.m. at MontClair-Lucania Funeral Home, 6901 W. Belmont Avenue, Chicago, IL 60634. The final viewing will take place on Saturday, August 22 from 8-9 a.m. at MontClair-Lucania Funeral Home, 6901 W. Belmont Avenue, Chicago, IL 60634. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 22 at Queen of All Saints Basilica, 6280 N. Sauganash Avenue, Chicago IL 60646. Immediately following, she will be laid to rest at Maryhill Catholic Cemetery, located at 8600 N. Milwaukee Avenue in Niles, IL 60714.

Lamentamos profundamente el fallecimiento de Grecia María Adames Mateo, ocurrido el jueves 13 de agosto. Amada esposa, madre, abuela, hermana, tía, amiga y maestra para muchos tanto en los Estados Unidos como en su natal República Dominicana, Grecia fue una bendición y una luz radiante para todos aquellos que la conocieron y la amaron.

Nacida en San Juan de la Maguana, República Dominicana, Grecia era la menor de siete hermanos muy unidos. Adoraba a sus hermanos y a su madre, y fue una segunda madre para muchos sobrinos, incluso criando a cuatro de ellos como si fueran propios. Una Católica devota, estudió para ser monja, pero Dios tenía otros planes cuando conoció a Israel Mateo (o "Mateo", como ella siempre lo llamaba), con quien estuvo casada durante 43 años y a quien amó hasta el último día de su vida.

Grecia e Israel tuvieron dos hijas con apenas 11 meses de diferencia. Grecia fue una madre extraordinaria cuyo amor incondicional y poderoso ejemplo marcarán para siempre a sus hijas, quienes agradecen a Dios cada día por el honor de haber sido sus hijas. Quizás el papel que Grecia más atesoraba era el de abuelita dedicada a sus cuatro nietos, a quienes adoraba (y consentía) sin medida.

La profesora Adames —como se la conocía en la República Dominicana— fue una maestra talentosa y entregada que marcó muchas vidas, y nunca dejó de ser maestra de corazón.

Su calidez y bondad innatas, su fe inquebrantable y su entusiasmo por la vida la definían. La personalidad vibrante de Grecia (como su sentido de la moda) era inolvidable; su risa era contagiosa, y su generosidad y autenticidad hacían que muchas personas se sintieran como en casa a su lado.

Grecia no temía decir la verdad y nunca se apartó de sus principios morales. A lo largo de su vida, demostró una fortaleza y una valentía admirables: desde el coraje necesario para empezar de nuevo como inmigrante en un país desconocido —dejando atrás una profesión que amaba para trabajar como empleada de limpieza en el Hotel Drake y así sacar adelante a sus hijas— hasta superar un cáncer de páncreas a finales de sus 70 años, contra todo pronóstico. Sin importar cuál fuera el desafío, su fe y el amor por su familia la ayudaron a perseverar.

A Grecia le sobreviven su esposo, Israel; sus hijas, Gray y Darhiana, junto con sus esposos—a quienes quiso como a hijos propios—Chris y Eric; y sus nietos: Alessandra, Lyanna, Julian y Mirielle; y su hermano, Conrado; y varios sobrinos. Le precedieron en la muerte su admirado padre, Magino Cueva del Cristo (quien murió cuando ella era niña); su amada madre, Rogelia Adames; y sus hermanos Sofía, Altagracia, Bienvenido (Cuco), Francisco (Gully) and Servio.

Grecia fue muy amada por sus familiares y amigos; atesorarán por siempre su recuerdo y la huella que dejó en nuestros corazones y en nuestras vidas. Deseamos que ella nos sonría desde el cielo, regocijándose con Dios y sus seres queridos que la acompañan, hasta que nos volvamos a encontrar.
