

Gunter H. Gehl entered eternal life on October 31, 2025. He was preceded in death by his devoted, much-loved wife of 61 years, Annelene Gehl, his parents Christian and Frieda Gehl, his brother Walter and sisters Karla, Lisa, and Helga. Gunter is survived by nieces and nephews in Germany and many good friends in the Chicago area.
Gunter was born in Germany in January 1929 and immigrated to the USA in 1951. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953 and honorably discharged in 1962. Following his service, he was recognized by Honor Flight Chicago for Korean veterans in 2018 and was a member of the American Legion Post 166 in Glenview, IL for over 30 years.
He lived most of his life in Chicago in the Edgebrook neighborhood and worked as lab supervisor in the orthotic-prosthetic profession. In 1965, he joined Northwestern University as instructor and Director of Prosthetic Education. After 25 years, he retired as Professor Emeritus. Continuing his service, he was sponsored by the State Department and volunteered to teach prosthetics and fit children at hospitals in Egypt and Haiti.
He enjoyed extensive travelling around the US and the world, that included mountain climbing, whitewater rafting, hot air ballooning, and more.
In 2014, he moved to the Vi at the Glen Senior Living in Glenview, IL, where he received great care and shared a happy and productive end of life with many new friends!
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025, from 8:30-10:30 AM at Drake and Son Funeral Home, 5303 N. Western Ave., Chicago, IL, 60625, with a service taking place at 10:30 AM. Entombment will be at the mausoleum at Rosehill Cemetery, 5800 N. Ravenswood Ave., Chicago, IL, 60660, with military honors rendered.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations in Gunter's name be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or Paralyzed Veterans of America.
