

Janina Bernas, born on September 22, 1936, in Warszawa, Poland, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2026, at the age of 89 years. A resident of Chicago, Illinois, Janina was best remembered for being kind, open, honest, and always willing to listen to anyone that needed to be heard. She was strong, independent, and stubborn, and struggled with losing that independence. Her family was her most important priority in life, and she made ensuring her family’s wellbeing and happiness her lifelong goal.
Janina is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Agnes Wiatr (Bernas), her son-in-law, Marcin Wiatr, her granddaughter, Sabrina Wiatr, and the pets that loved and miss her, Lucia (the cat) and Charlie (the dog). She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Jozef Bernas, and her son, Peter Bernas.
Visitation will be held at Malec & Sons Funeral Home, located at 6000 North Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60646, on February 19, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Prayers will be offered at the same location at 7:00 pm.
The final viewing will take place on February 20, 2026, at 8:30 am at Malec & Sons Funeral Home, followed by closing prayers at 9:30 am. The funeral service will be held at St. Constance Catholic Church, 5843 W Strong St, Chicago, IL 60630, at 10:00 am. The committal service will follow at St Adalbert Catholic Cemetery & Mausoleums, 6800 N Milwaukee Ave, Niles, IL 60714.
