Julia Falconer Rainer, 95, daughter of Maurice and Kate Falconer Marwick and a life-long resident of Glencoe and Northfield, Illinois, died peacefully on September 16th, 2022. She is survived by her nephew, Andrew Marwick and his wife Darcy, and her cousin, Katherine Layman and her husband Dennis Gee, as well as her cousin’s children, Christopher Hein, Gregory Hein and Elizabeth Boswell. She is predeceased by her brother Edward F. Marwick and her husband, Robert, who died in 2008.
Julia was a huge fan of Queen Elizabeth. She would have been amused and delighted that not only were she and the Queen born the same year, but they died within a week of each other.
Julia loved books, travel and Bridge. She owned a bookstore, Julia Marwick Books, in Northfield for many decades and met her husband at the annual booksellers convention in Washington, D.C. Her travels were extensive, including trips to almost every country in the world and even two visits to Antarctica. Her slide collection documenting those travels was astonishing. She loved playing Duplicate Bridge (not contract Bridge) largely because of the mental stimulation. In later years, when she traveled by cruising, she chose her cruises based on the quality of Bridge played on the cruise. Even as her eyesight faded, she would ask her Bridge partner to play cards from the dummy for her so she could keep playing.
Education was another passion and she was a lifelong learner. Julia was proud of having been selected to be on the highly selective Quiz Kids radio program as a teenager in the 1940s. She was a graduate of New Trier High School.
She was also a generous contributor to her alma mater, the University of Chicago, where, among other gifting, she has sponsored a scholarship fund.
Burial will be private. There will be a celebration of life at The Happ Inn in Northfield from 1-3 on October 15th. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the University of Chicago, at The University of Chicago, Gift Administration and Business Data, 5235 S. Harper Ct, 4th Fl, Chicago, IL 60515 would be appreciated.
