Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, Kay Foon Chiu, age 86, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away on Friday, April 25, 2025. Kay Foon was born on June 25, 1938, in Canton, China to Kwok Beiu Chiu and Chow Yit Fong. Kay was preceded in passing by his older sister, Gan Wan Chiu-Hom, older brother Yum Kiew Chew, and younger brother Chur Wo Chiu. Kay Foon was a devoted husband, married to Kit Ching Chiu for 56 years, a caring father to Helanne (Ravee), Melinda, and William (Sandra), and a loving grandfather to Ethan and Jasmine.
Kay Foon was born in the Halu village of the Xinhui District, Gujing town of the Guangdong Province, China, later moving with his family to Hong Kong. He immigrated to the United States in 1966 and returned briefly to Hong Kong in 1969 to marry Kit Ching. Kay was the owner and head chef of Kumoon Restaurant in Chicago. Even after retiring in 2000 to care for his grandchildren, his entrepreneurial spirit endured as he worked as a freelance chef at several notable Cantonese American restaurants on Chicago's North Side. Kay often spoiled his grandchildren by cooking them homemade meals, treating them to their favorite snacks, and frequently taking them on outings to Chicago’s Chinatown.
Kay Foon showed his love through food, always preparing and sharing meals with those he cared about. Instead of saying hello, he would often ask if you had eaten yet, and would offer to cook you your favorite food. He had a love for baked goods, whether it was BBQ pork buns from the Chinese bakery or sweet treats from neighborhood bakeries. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching rental videos consisting of Hong Kong television dramas and movies, and catching up on the news reading the Chinese newspapers. Kay Foon instilled the importance of family in his children, and leaves behind a legacy of resilience and perseverance.
