She was born in China and immigrated to the United States in 1954 at the age of 19. She and her family (Gat Tung, Ghim Soon and Kay) settled in Chicago. She attended Nicholas Senn and Wells high schools. She took evening classes to learn to type and perfect her English.
Keen married Arthur Jung in 1958 and together they raised four children, two girls and two boys. She was an industrious woman and went from working in her mother’s Chinese laundry business to working as a data entry operator at the Walgreen Company, Combined Insurance and finally at the Aon Corporation. She eventually retired from Aon to spend time with her children and five grandchildren.
Her greatest love was her immediate and extended family and she and her husband Arthur would cook a homemade Chinese dinner every Sunday. These family dinners brought all her loved ones together at the table to talk and she made a point of making too much food so everyone would have leftovers to take home.
She was an intelligent woman and enjoyed the challenge of games and the excitement of casinos. She was an expert Mah Jong and Chinese Thirteen Poker player and loved to have her friends over to play and socialize. She was known to stay up to the wee hours in Vegas playing Pai Gow and Black Jack and always managed to come back a winner. She would use her winnings to buy the family dinner at the casino buffet, where she always made a point to try everything, especially the shrimp and crab legs!
Keen is predeceased by husband Arthur Lai Jung (Jeong Joong Mun). She was a loving and thoughtful mother to daughters Susan, Sharon (Tony), sons Albert (Alexandra), Jeffrey (Vanna), and a doting grandmother (“Po Po”) to Andrew (Lilan), Anthony, Alexander, Jessica and Remy.
She is also survived by her sister Kay (Joe), nephews Bryant (Gabriela), Kevin (Eileen), James (Amandah) niece Karen, and a great aunt to Rylan, Kiara, Noemi, Naya and Bodhi.
She will be dearly missed but we will remember her fondly for her delicious soup, her handmade sticky rice and of course her sense of humor and laughter, which we can still hear in our hearts. May she rest in peace and spend eternity with her husband, who she dearly missed and the rest of her loved ones.
