Luis Alfonso Velez, 66, born in Quito, Ecuador; grew up and lived his life in Chicago, IL.

Luis is the beloved son of Maria Velez; loving brother to Manuel Velez, Susana (Robert) Kurtz, Fannie (Merrill Sutherin) Sills; proud uncle to Lisa (Anthony) Kranz, Sean (Jessica) Sills, Chris (Klaudia) Sills, Abigail (Dillon) Patrick, Hannah Kurtz; cherished granduncle to Jaxon, Lucas and Sean Jr. Sills; and loving friend to many. He is preceded in death by his father, Alfonso Velez.

Luis retired from the Internal Revenue Service in June 2020; a long career he was very proud of. He was a very outgoing person and never met a stranger. His generosity knew no bounds. Luis lived life to the fullest; always singing and dancing. His laughter was contagious and his jokes never left a dry eye. Luis loved sports as well as the arts; a true Chicago Bears and White Sox fan and a dedicated patron of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Luis, you will always be remembered in our hearts as our goofy, generous, and big-hearted son, brother, uncle, and friend. You are sorely missed. We love you.

My prayers are for the family and Luis. Luis was such a kind person. It brakes my heart to hear this. I saw him and we talked before my own retirement. God is now enjoying his smile, kindness and eagerness to help. Luis, pray for us.

I just learned of Luis' passing this morning. I knew Luis when I worked at IRS over 20 years ago and I will always remember his friendly smile and warm heart. I still saw Luis downtown often. We'd chat and I always enjoyed catching up with him. Luis was a wonderful person and I am saddened that I will no longer see him downtown, but will remember his spirit always.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I worked with Luis for a few years, although I only met him once. He cheerfully greeted me whenever I called and was always willing to help solve a problem. My thoughts are with all of you. Shelly Welker, Marquette, MI

Such a beautiful video tribute to a wonderful person. My heart hurts deeply for Louie’s family. 🙏🏻
I was blessed to first meet his sister Susana and then Fannie and through Fannie, meet Louie and the whole family over time and they became like family. Louie was such a great guy; so funny, great laugh and smile, and ready to make one laugh -at his expense...always ready to give and receive a hug. 💜
I was honored to be at a number of family events over the years, enjoy the company of Louie and his loving family and witness his deep love for them and theirs for him. When I would randomly see him on the train or bus after work; at a family event or at Dappers Restaurant, he always made it a point to see if I was taking care of my his funny but truly caring “Louie way.”🙏🏻
I’ll always be grateful to him and Manuel and Maria and Alfonso for being a friend to my beloved Uncle Truman (RIP) when they were at Dappers at the same time (frequently) and engage in conversation with him.😊. My uncle would tell me that he saw “the family.” 💜 No kindness is ever wasted.
Very hard to accept his physical person is no longer on this earth, and while his spirit is with our Heavenly Father, he remains with us in our hearts. ❤️
Louie, Your physical absence will always be deeply felt, but the love and laughter you gave everyone will always be present with us. You loved us well. 🙏🏻💜

I am so sad to hear this unexpected news. I had known Luis for many years at IRS and saw him at more than a few Bears games. Luis was always friendly and did have a big laugh and sense of humor. I will miss seeing him at the Bears game. He will be missed. My condolences to Manuel and the rest of his family.
