Luz Colchado, 77, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2025, at her home in Chicago, Illinois, surrounded by her loving family.

Born Maria de la Luz Gonzalez Castillo on May 12, 1948, in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. She was the beloved daughter of Porfirio and Santiaga Gonzalez and the middle child of three. In 1963, she met the love of her life, Carlos Colchado. They married in 1968 and moved to Chicago in 1970, where they built a life together and started a family.

Luz was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She and Carlos raised three daughters—Lucy, Hilda, and Sandra—whom she lovingly nurtured and supported. As a mother, Luz walked her daughters to school each day, participated in school activities like Breakfast with Santa, and served as a chaperone on field trips. She was deeply involved in their upbringing and created a home filled with warmth, music, and the comforting aroma of traditional Mexican meals from her kitchen.

One of her greatest joys came in 2012 when she welcomed her granddaughter, Desiree. The two shared a special bond, and Luz found renewed purpose in helping to raise her—singing songs, playing games, teaching her to pray, and preparing her meals and school lunches. Through her granddaughter, Luz relived the joy of motherhood. Luz worked on and off throughout her life and officially retired in 2020.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Carlos Colchado; daughters Lucy, Hilda, and Sandra; and her cherished granddaughter, Desiree. She also leaves behind her sister, Juana Gonzalez; her brothers- and sisters-in-law; many nieces and nephews; and countless friends who will miss her warmth, strength, and kindness.

Luz’s legacy lives on in the love she gave so freely, the traditions she passed down, and the family she built and cherished. She will be dearly missed and forever remembered.

María de la Luz González Castillo nació el 12 de mayo de 1948 en San Luis Potosí, México. Era la querida hija de Porfirio y Santiago González y era la mediana de sus tres hijos. En 1963, conoció al amor de su vida, Carlos Colchado. Se casaron en 1968 y se mudaron a Chicago en 1970, donde construyeron una vida juntos y formaron una familia.

Luz fue una esposa, madre y abuela dedicada. Ella y Carlos criaron a tres hijas: Lucy, Hilda y Sandra, a quienes crio y apoyó con cariño. Como madre, Luz acompañaba a sus hijas a la escuela todos los días, participaba en actividades escolares como el Desayuno con Santa Claus y era acompañante en las excursiones. Se involucró profundamente en su crianza y creó un hogar lleno de calidez, música y el reconfortante aroma de la comida tradicional mexicana en de su cocina.

Una de sus mayores alegrías llegó en 2012 cuando dio la bienvenida a su nieta, Desiree. Compartían un vínculo especial, y Luz encontró un nuevo propósito al ayudar a criarla: cantando canciones, jugando, enseñándole a rezar y preparando sus comidas y almuerzos escolares. A través de su nieta, Luz revivió la alegría de la maternidad. Luz trabajó intermitentemente a lo largo de su vida y se jubiló oficialmente en 2020.

Le sobreviven su esposo de 57 años, Carlos Colchado; sus hijas Lucy, Hilda y Sandra; y su querida nieta, Desiree. También le sobreviven su hermana, Juana González; sus cuñados y cuñadas; numerosos sobrinos y sobrinas; Y un sinfín de amigos que extrañarán su calidez, fuerza y bondad.

El legado de Luz perdura en el amor que brindó con tanta generosidad, las tradiciones que transmitió y la familia que construyó y cuidó. La extrañaremos profundamente y la recordaremos por siempre.
