Maria was the beloved daughter of the late Manuela Casanova and the late Jose Casanova. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, she later lived in Germany as the spouse of a U.S. military service member before making Chicago her home in 1976, where she built a life rooted in faith, family, and unwavering resilience.
Maria was the devoted and loving mother of Luis E. Balaguer, Grisselle Sydnor, and Johana Garcia. She was the proud grandmother of Giselle, Lynn, Roxy, Penny, and Sadee, and the cherished great-grandmother of Rae, Rubee, Julian, and Luna. Her greatest joy came from her family, and her love extended far beyond blood relatives. To so many, Maria was a second mother, offering kindness, encouragement, wisdom, and a welcoming heart. She truly was a mother to all who knew her.
As a single mother, Maria worked tirelessly to provide for her children, teaching them through her example the values of strength, perseverance, compassion, and unconditional love. Her sacrifices laid the foundation for generations to come, and her legacy will continue to inspire all whose lives she touched.
Maria found happiness in life's simple pleasures. She loved spending time with her family and friends, nurturing her deep faith, shopping, and traveling. In her later years, her life was greatly enriched by the treasured friendships she formed at The American House in Oak Park and through her beloved faith family at The Urban Rock Church of Chicago. These communities brought her joy, companionship, and spiritual strength.
Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we find comfort in knowing that Maria's love, generosity, and unwavering faith will remain with us always. Her gentle spirit, warm smile, and generous heart will never be forgotten.
