Marilyn E. Coy (nee Petterson) was born into life in St. Louis, Missouri on March 25, 1932, and born into eternity on Monday, March 2, 2015. The daughter of Carl Henry & Alice Eugenia Petterson, Marilyn and her family relocated to Chicago in 1942, where she attended Sullivan High School, graduating in 1949. Marilyn was an active and beloved member of West Ridge United Methodist since the age of ten, where she served in the choir, sang solos, was a treasurer and a liturgist. Marilyn met her husband, David, when they worked together at Kemper Insurance and married on March 15, 1951. Throughout her career, she served as a legal secretary for various Chicago law firms prior to retirement.
Marilyn lived life to the fullest. As a teenager, she was delighted to be crowned the “North Side Ice Queen” at a local ice skating competition. When her children were growing up, she was just as famous for her brownies for the neighborhood kids, as she was for her open heart which she showered on all. She loved music and theater, and was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, Blackhawks and Bulls. She adored her grandchildren, and loved nothing more than to spend time with them. At her favorite vacation spot in northern Michigan, she was game to kayak or ride on the jet ski despite her advancing years.
After the death of her son, Stuart, in 1992, Marilyn became active in the Catholic Charities LOSS program; Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide. For many years she also participated in a “Writing For Your Family” class and spent many hours detailing the stories of her life. Marilyn will be missed by many.
Marilyn is survived by her children; Steven Lee (Janice) Coy, Scott Mitchell (Karen) Coy, Cynthia Jean Coy; her former daughter-in-law Julie Marie Coy; her grandchildren Linus David Coy, Byron Daniel Coy, Emma Rose (Donnie) Drewry, and Elliott David Coy; her niece and nephew, Julie Ann Mahdi and David Christopher Braddock. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Lee Coy; her son, Stuart Fitzgerald Coy; and her sister, Frances Jean Petterson.
