Aunt Marge was such a quiet and constant force in my life.  She was a person I remember as kind and funny, smart and open-minded.  
Growing up, our family spent Thanksgivings in Chicago.  As an adolescent who felt awkward and unsure of herself, whenever I spoke with Aunt Margie, she left me feeling heard and valued.  She always spoke to me with love and listened as if what I said mattered.  I took that confidence with me.  We would talk about books, too.
She loved The Girl of the Limberlost, so, of course, I had to read it.
It was then my book-club selection for my month soon after.  We'd share little inside jokes, and she would always play along.  There is such comfort in knowing there was a person out there like that.  For me, she remains.  Love and Light,  Aunt Marge!

 

Some of the best memories I have shared with my mother are our travels together. Some highlights include: Bermuda on a glass bottom boat, NYC at the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City,  London at Westminster Abbey, Windsor Castle, The Tower of London, Knoxville, TN at the 1982 World's Fair, Monterey Bay at the Aquarium and 4th of July fireworks over the Bay, San Francisco riding on the Cable Cars and sharing chocolates at Ghiradelli. So many trips to Kentucky and Tennessee State Parks. I treasure these adventures. Travel safe mom!

Eulogizing my sweet Grandma is my most important work thus far.

Good morning, dear family and friends. On behalf of the entire McBride family, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to join us in remembrance of our beloved grandmother, mother, and aunt, Marjorie. For those who don’t know, I am Melissa McBride, Marjorie’s eldest grandchild. I lived just upstairs from her in our family’s home on Winchester until I was 18. I’m met today with the near-impossible task of attempting to briefly canonize Grandma’s 100-year-long life; to remember her influence and impact on us all.

Marjorie Sue Miller was born in Franklin, Ohio on December 1, 1922 to Albert and Sudie Miller. Her time in Franklin was short-lived, and the family soon headed to North Vernon, Indiana. No matter where they lived after that, North Vernon was always “home.” Over the years, the McBride clan has enjoyed numerous Labor Day trips to North Vernon and surrounding areas to visit our family.

In her teenage years, Marjorie nearly died after being diagnosed with Scarlet Fever. She missed months of school as she recovered. As many of you may know, she had a sharp memory, and she was able to vividly recall this time in her life even into her 90’s.

Professionally, Marjorie was a jane of all trades. The majority of her working years were spent at Mass Mutual Life Insurance Company, but not before she got her feet wet selling Mint Juleps at Churchill Downs during the Kentucky Derby. Marjorie later worked at the Jeffboat shipyard in Jeffersonville, Indiana, which built Patrol/Torpedo boats for WW2. She once shared that they were one boat away from manufacturing the infamous PT109. Only, the production of numbered PT boats was alternated between two different factories.

I love you Grandma. I miss you so much already. I hope you are at peace and in tremendous comfort and I hope to see you again some day. 

My condolences to the whole family for the loss of this amazing woman. She left behind such a rich legacy. 

I will truly miss my Lady. I loved her smile.... she had a smile that could light up a room. I will miss all your stories, the holidays we shared and hearing about the books you read. I thank you guys for sharing this beautiful lady with me and making me feel like family. I'm blessed to have had her in my life. Thank you! And my condolences and prayers for you all. I love you Marjorie.

My sincerest condolences on the loss of your beloved mom.  I only met her once or twice, but I could tell how very special she was.   My thoughts and prayers are with the whole family during this difficult time.
