It is with heartfelt sadness that we acknowledge the death of the patriarch of our small family, Marshall Cohen.
He was the only and eldest son of David Cohen and Esther Cohen, nee Foreman.
He spent 35 years teaching his beloved English to inner city students of Chicago’s West Side.
After growing up in Lawndale during the 50s, he attended and graduated from Harrison Elementary, Von Steuben High School, and Northeastern University (then known as Teacher’s College).
His draft number never came up but he followed the anti-war movement during the Vietnam era. He promised to teach during the 1960s and was given some financial assistance. He also worked part-time to help his parents send his only sister, Sharon Cohen (1952-2021), to The University of Illinois – Champaign.
He had a great love of the English language, American films, and autobiographical literature of all types.
Left to mourn his passing are his only son Matthew; stepdaughter Zana Marino; and his wife of 30 years, Estella.
He loved flowers so don’t hesitate in sending them…he’d love it.
A visitation for Marshall is scheduled for Monday, June 24, 2024 from 4-8PM at Drake and Son Funeral Home, 5303 N. Western Ave., Chicago, IL, 60625. A visitation will also take place the next day, Tuesday, June 25, 2024 from 11:30-12:30 at the funeral home. A funeral service will then occur at 1PM at the Hennig Chapel in Rosehill Cemetery, 5800 N. Ravenswood Ave., Chicago IL, 60660.
