Michael never met a stranger. Outgoing, thoughtful, and endlessly generous, he made friends everywhere life took him — from his childhood in Glencoe and New Trier High School to Miami University, Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management, the Winnetka Rotary, and his community in Florida. Though he faced physical challenges throughout his life, they never slowed him down or dimmed his zest for living.
Above all, Michael loved his family. A passionate coach and sports fan, he was famous for turning off games before the ending — whether to write his own outcome or move on to the next adventure, no one ever knew. The Mighty Ducks held a special place in his heart. He found joy in travel, the outdoors, and his daily walks through the botanic gardens.
Michael is survived by Peg, his devoted wife of 49 years; children Beth (Wilson), Jill (Matt), and Sarah (Cem); seven adored grandchildren; sisters Ann (Trip) and Mary and their families; in-laws Mary and Joe (Cindy); and many nieces and nephews who will carry his memory forward.
A celebration of Michael's life will be held in late July in Chicago. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association, the International Waldenström's Macroglobulinemia Foundation (IWMF), or the Chicago Botanic Garden.
