OBITUARY

Peter M. Bator

March 26, 1958May 29, 2020

Peter M. Bator passed away on May 29, 2020 following a sudden illness. Born March 26, 1958 to Mary and Joseph Bator in Evergreen Park, IL, Peter was raised in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood by Mary and Aunt Johanne Saucuvenas alongside brother Jody and sister Mary Jo (Carlos) Bator-Oses. Peter discovered his passion for education at an early age. He attended De LaSalle High School, earned a B.A. in education from Illinois State University in 1980, and a Master’s Degree from University of Illinois at Chicago in 1988.

Peter met his wife Julia (nee. Read) through a softball league in 1983. They wed June 29, 1985. Peter and Julia raised two children, Mike and Emily, in Alsip, IL. Peter was, above all, a devoted and compassionate father. He always made time for his kids, who cherished him dearly. Peter was thrilled to welcome his new daughter-in-law, Carly, and soon to be son-in-law, Brett, into the family.

Peter was a special education teacher on Chicago’s south side for over 35 years. He spent the majority of his career at Julian High School and worked the past four years at Bouchet Math & Science Academy, where he joined a vibrant school community with a passionate staff and made fast friends. He devoted his professional life to serving children with special needs. Peter was eager to work every day.

Peter was an avid bowler, who managed “The Julian Rollers”, for many years. A Chicago sports fan through-and-through, he celebrated championship runs for all four major teams and relished the end of the Cubs pennant drought most of all. Peter was a BBQ expert and loved hosting parties where ribs were the star attraction.

Peter made an impact on everyone he knew. He was a kind, intelligent, and light-hearted man, who will be sorely missed. Donations can be made to the Children First Fund (childrenfirstfund.org) in his honor.

Bator Family,
May you find peace through all the positive memories from dear friends and family. I met Mr. Bator When Michael and then Emily came through their elementary school Meadow Lane, and my classes. We shared a few thoughts and laughs. He had a great vision on keeping children engaged and cared for while being educated. He will be missed by many. Sending prayers and positive vibes to all.

This is a very sad loss for me. I have known Pete for a very long time-back to when my dear friend Julie and Pete were dating-when Pete was Julie’s team’s softball coach. We hung out together as young couples- going to each other’s homes, raising kids together- sharing all those many memories. Pete was always thoughtful, and when I was a young widow with 2 small kids; Pete took the time to introduce my young sons to the world of flying remote control planes. My oldest is now a private pilot ( who would of known the impact Pete had on him). And Pete had an impact on me- Pete, always a quiet, good listener, was the best person to share what was going on. Through ups and downs, he always intently listened, and I always felt better after.
He loved Jules and his beautiful children Mike and Emily. I am so deeply sorry for this huge hole that is now in your lives. I hope, over time, the lovely happy times will fill your hearts and take away the sadness you are now feeling.
Wishing all of those missing Pete, much love.
Rest In Peace dear Pete. You will not be forgotten.

I worked with Peter in the special education department at Julian High School and also enjoyed being a part of the Julian Rollers Bowling League that he managed year after after.
My prayers are with the family as they survive the pain caused by the loss of a loved one.

Peter and I worked together for many years at
Percy L. Julian High School. I found him to be a good friend and colleague. He showed tremendous compassion and dedication to his students and was loved by his students. Peter was very popular and well known by the Julian staff. He was very instrumental in starting our first and only staff bowling league the Julian Rollers which he became league President for many years. Peter and I also enjoyed being the only two Southside dedicated Chicago Cubs fans in the building among the staff. He will truly be missed by myself and many others. We will keep his loving wife, children, and family in our prayers. May the Lord continue to bless you and bring comfort to your hearts.

Dear Julie, I was so saddened to hear about your husband's passing. It is hard to find the right words that would bring you and your family some comfort. But know that I have you in my thoughts and my prayers. Prayers that the Holy Spirit will comfort and strengthen you. I am certain that he will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. Cherish all the memories. All my love to you, Carmen

I am blessed to have known Mr. Bator. There wasn’t a task we couldn’t tackle as Diverse Learner Teachers. He always showed firm concern and care for helping the students. We often talked about our families and how they kept us from just walking out of the building when things got rough. He would say I’m still here because of Julie and the next wedding. We shared the same lunchtime and would laugh if we beat each other to the microwave where we would talk about food prep and recipes. Mr. Bator never backed down and had so much knowledge and support. It was a rough year and joked that we came back for more. The photo is from the strike. I will miss my D.L. Teammate dearly.
