Rafael Osorio

Born on May 6, 1939, in Naguabo, Puerto Rico, Rafael was the son of the late Isabel Osorio Agosto and Marcelino Osorio. To his siblings he was affectionately known as Lito, to his friends as Oso, and to his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren as Honey. Regardless of the name by which he was known, he was loved by all who knew him.

Rafael devoted his life to education, obtaining two master’s degrees and spending decades as a teacher and passionate advocate for bilingual education in Chicago. He believed in the power of learning and worked tirelessly to ensure opportunities for students of all backgrounds. As a respected educator, mentor, and champion for bilingual programs, he touched countless lives and inspired generations of students through his commitment, compassion, and strong belief in their potential. All of these traits he was able to also instill upon his two children.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Rafael was known for his infectious sense of humor, determined spirit, and his kindness and willingness to always help others. He found joy in bringing people together and creating lasting memories with family and friends. His kindness, determination, and generosity will continue to live on through all who were blessed to know him.

Rafael was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Genarita Osorio (née Prado), whom he loved dearly and whose memory he carried with him every day.

He is survived by his loving children, Luz Castello (David), and Rafael Osorio Jr. (Sarah); his adored grandchildren, Valerie, Rafael (Bud), Erik, Zoe, Ethan, Samantha, and Xander; and his treasured great-grandchildren, Lalia, Daymian, Armando, Troy, Bella, Raven, and Nico. He is also survived by his sisters, Mency and Delia, along with many extended family members, friends, former colleagues, and students whose lives he enriched.

Family was the center of Rafael's world. He enjoyed being behind the wheel, taking family road trips, and exploring new places together. Summers were often spent fishing or camping at Woodhaven, where lifelong friendships and many wonderful memories were created. He enjoyed telling jokes, cheering on the Cubs, watching comedy and action movies, and following professional wrestling. Whether sharing stories around a campfire, cheering on his favorite team, or simply spending time with loved ones, Rafael brought laughter, warmth, and joy wherever he went.

Rafael leaves behind a beautiful example of love, compassion, and devotion. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, educator, and friend. His wisdom, humor, and generous spirit will continue to guide and inspire those who knew him.

He will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always loved.

Visitation will be held Thursday, September 24, from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm with a Memorial Service at 2:00 pm at Montclair-Lucania Funeral Home, 6901 W Belmont Ave, Chicago, IL 60634.
