Richard F. Koertgen, 77, passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2016. A veteran of the US Navy. His professional career led him in many directions, including driver for 7-up, Evanston motorcycle police officer, salesman, personal chauffer for Hugh Hefner, and security details at area hospitals to name a few. A life long Chicago sports fan, he could always be counted on for the latest sports topic. He was extremely proud of his German ancestry, crediting it for his boyish good looks, and insisting "doppus" was a real German word and that not only his children, but his grandchildren were "100% German". Above all, his legacy will be one of laughter. The owner of a wild sense of humor, taken directly from his mother, he could find humor in anything, and often did. He is survived by his devoted children, Laura (Kevin) Sutor, Bob (Maureen) Koertgen, Sharon (John) Hillmann, and Amy (Robert) Schmidt. Former spouse of Dolorita Koertgen. A proud Grandpa to Adam (Heidi), Zachary, Bobby, Joshua, Emily, Emma, Matthew, Jacob, Luke and Caleb and a loving Grandpa Grande to Calvin and Olivia. Also survived by his sisters, Dorothy (Jim), Lorraine (late Leo), and twin sister Rita (late John). Preceded in death by his parents and sister, Geraldine. Memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2016, at 10:00am, St. Gregory Church, 5545 N. Paulina, Chicago. Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00am. Arrangements under the direction of Drake & Son Funeral Home, Chicago, IL.
