May 22, 1936September 8, 2020

Rita Martinez, 84, was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt. She passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at home in Chicago due to Lung Cancer.

Rita was born on May 22, 1936 in San Antonio Texas to Manuel L. Martinez and Antonia Hernandez Martinez. She was the second oldest of five daughters. Her sisters are Mary (Robert), the late Juanita (Carlos), Elydia (the late George) and Angela (the late Jesse).

Rita at 4’11” was very active in her youth. She loved playing volleyball and softball. In earlier years the family would, get together to have picnics in forest preserves and would always end in a good rivalry softball game. She loved to play poker with her sisters and their spouses. In her later years, she would spend much of her time doing puzzles. She became the most devoted Cubs fan!! She was beyond happy the day they won the World Series! Go Cubbies!!

More important than her Cubbies was her family. Her heart grew more with each addition of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was mother to the late Manuel (the late Diane), Yolanda (Alex), Ricardo Santiago, and Laura. Her grandchildren are Yvonne, Manuel Antonio, Albert, Gilberto (Edna) and Rebecca. Her great-grandchildren are Mateo, Sabato, Eva, Dominic, Orlando, and her recent great-granddaughter, Emma.

I remember our last outing before the virus- sitting in the living room with your mom, Your pooch and you chatting it up before we left. I always loved stopping in to see her before we headed out- she was so loved and so loving with the best sense of humor!! My heart is sad for
You and your family- so glad you all have each other and are so close. Gods speed...
