Delores was a 1963 graduate of Childersburg High School. After attending business school, she began her career at Beaunit Mills. She married her long-time classmate and friend, Billy Joe (BJ) Meeks of Childersburg and is survived by their daughter, Wendy Meeks Burpee (Jerry) of Madison, AL; granddaughter, Bailey Anne Burpee; and daughter, Michele Meeks Brakefield (Paul) of Lincoln, AL; step-granddaughter, Shelby Jean Brakefield. Delores became the secretary of First Baptist Church in Childersburg in 1980, a job she would love until retiring 33 years later. Delores was a devoted and beloved member of the church and the church staff. She described her role as counselor and confidant to countless members of the congregation throughout her tenure. She also served as a baseball mom and the first lady of Childersburg for 27 years of BJ’s mayoral career.
Delores enjoyed “spiritedly” watching sports (or anything competitive), reading, quiet afternoons on the patio with the water fountain, bird watching, and fishing with her sister (Sandy). She was a member of the church choir and loved singing and harmonizing with her siblings during the holidays. Some of her favorite moments were spent sharing her faith and love with her pride and joy and only grandchild, Bailey.
In addition to her children and granddaughter, Delores is survived by siblings, Don Maddox; Sandy (Mike) Giddens; Michael (Sharon) Maddox and family friend, Sharon S. Maddox. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by granddaughter, Kasey Meeks Burpee and siblings, Charles Allen Maddox (Frances); Lynese Dobbs (Donald); Billy Maddox (Linda); Linda Jinks (Harold) and family friend, Kay Camp. She leaves behind many friends including neighbors of 60 years and 17 nieces and nephews.
