Jim was born on March 14, 1933, in Steenbergen, Holland and the middle child to his sisters Bets and Ria. After serving in the marines, he immigrated to Canada in 1958, beginning a new chapter that would shape both his family life and a remarkable career. In 1960, he married his forever sweetheart, Vicky. Together they built a life grounded in faith, hard work, and community while raising their two daughters Jenny and Elly.
Jim will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 66 years, Vicky; his children: Jenny (Terry) and Elly (Elmer); his grandchildren: Kristina (Matthew), Stephanie (Scott), Melissa (Kevin), Rachelle (Justin), Sherylynn (Andrew), Ryan (Charli), Derek (Shelby) and his 26 great-grandchildren.
Jim was deeply involved in his church and in missionary work in Brazil, as well as many other ministries close to his heart. His faith guided the way he lived, served, and treated others. Those who knew him remember a man who was friendly, generous, and witty—someone who made friends wherever he went and left people feeling seen and valued.
A gifted engineer and natural innovator, Jim became a partner at Ironside Machine and Welding in the late 1960s. Shortly thereafter, he became the sole owner and began collaborating with fellow entrepreneurs, inventing and refining industrial equipment. In the late 1960’s, Jim produced his first culvert pipe machine—one of the first in the world capable of producing a helical lock seam. This groundbreaking design left a lasting legacy and his machines are still in use today.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to all who showed care, compassion, and kindness to Jim during his final days as well as to those who have shared decades long friendships with him and for loving and caring for him so well over that time.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life Service at First Avenue Christian Assembly (46510 First Avenue) on Wednesday, February 18th at 2:00 p.m.
Jim’s legacy lives on through his faith, his family and the many lives he touched along the way.
