Andries is survived by his children: John Broekhuysen (Rheann), Jim Broekhuysen (Linda), and Dianne Dawson (Troy); his grandchildren: Kayla Chapman (Eddie), Cara Massier (Alex), James Broekhuysen, Kevan Broekhuysen, Sean Dawson and Jenna Schentag (Mitch); as well as six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 58 years, Patricia Dianne Broekhuysen, whom he cherished deeply.
Andries was born on June 20, 1933, in Waddinxveen, Holland during the Depression. His childhood in occupied Holland during the Second World War was a hardship that shaped him, instilling in him a quiet strength and resilience.
In 1955, he emigrated to Canada carrying just $300 and a Bible from his mother—a humble beginning that he transformed into a lifetime of purpose and fulfillment. The day he stepped off the train in Vancouver, he went straight to work, ready to build the life he envisioned.
A self-made man, Andries was guided by a quiet but unwavering faith, gentle wisdom, and a steadfast commitment to his family. He lived with kindness, thoughtfulness, and a calm strength that touched everyone who knew him.
He found joy in life’s simple pleasures—fishing, gardening, reading, and playing crib with family. He loved sharing the fruits (and vegetables) of his labour, giving them away with pride. He never missed a chance to remind those around him to stop and smell the flowers.
Above all, his children and grandchildren were the light of his life. Their visits brought him immeasurable joy, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
Andries leaves behind a legacy of love, humility, hard work, and faith. His life was a testament to perseverance and to the beauty of living with a generous heart.
He will be deeply missed, dearly remembered, and forever cherished.
