Born in Kurmalen, Latvia on November 20 , 1936 , Arthur arrived in Canada in 1954 and resided in Fawcett, Alberta. Art was skilled as a bridge builder and drywall finisher, which brought him to British Columbia in the mid 60’s. There he became a member of the IUPA union.
Art was a skilled orator and he loved nothing more than sharing his stories with everyone around him. He used his wisdom to become an apprenticeship teacher at BCIT to then pass on his skills to the next generation. Art had a story for every situation and about every situation, and he wanted nothing more than to share them with his family, friends, and students.
Art and Beverly went on their first date almost 42 years ago exactly, and have since shared a lifetime of memories together. They square danced together for more than 20 years, as well as they travelled the world . One memory they both held dear was their 35th wedding anniversary trip ,for which they took a cruise through the Panama Canal. For 15 years Art and Beverly also loved their life as snowbirds, spending their winters in Yuma, Arizona.
Once Art was no longer able to travel annually, he became the President of the local AOPO Senior’s Centre # 173 , and he helped coordinate activities there. Art was an excellent cribbage player and loved to play as often as he could. He was also a lifelong gardener, taking exquisite care of his roses and peonies.
Art was a true family man, he loved life, and exuded kindness to everyone he met. He coached his sons playing sports when they were young, and he always made time for everyone. In fact, time slowed down around Art. A sense of calm emanated from within his soul, and that could be felt by anyone around him. Although he always had a wise story to share, with lessons usually not so deep below the surface, he was also able to find the humour in most situations. He had a laugh that was proud and unabashed, and sharing a laugh with him was infectious.
Art is survived by his wife, Beverly, and five children ; Brenda, Gerald ( Birgid) , Elly ( Jeff), Michael (Kelly), and Gary ; also nine grandchildren; Glen, Jaime, Alexandre, Kathryn, Randee, Danielle, Brendan, Bradley and Brent; plus two great grandchildren ; Carson and Ace. He is also survived by his brother Hugo, his sister Inga, and his sister-in-law MaryAnne, as well as several nieces and nephews.
