Arthur Mortimer Long

Art was born in New Westminster and spent his early years in Port Mann, BC. He was 13 years old when his family moved to England, prior to the start of World War II. He enlisted in the British Merchant Navy in 1944 at the age of 18 and was a participant in the Normandy Campaign. In the early 1960s Art left the Merchant Navy and returned to Canada where he was employed in the Federal Correction Services, retiring in 1987.

Art was a founding member of the Reform Party of Canada, a longtime volunteer driver for the Cancer Society and a member of the IOOF. He enjoyed his morning coffee at McDonald’s with his friends and he took an avid interest in current events.

A lifelong bachelor, Art enjoyed the company of his special lady friends; Peggy, Joan and Pat, in turn; each of whom he outlived. He dined out often, always dressed in a sports jacket and tie. After retirement Art was able to take some trips back to England with his sister June where they would reconnect with relatives and revisit the areas where they had lived in their youth.

Art was predeceased by his parents George and Annie, his three siblings and their spouses; Bill (Ivy) Long, Dorothy (Gene) Brown, and June (Dick) Peter. He is survived by nieces and nephews in England and the USA.
