Barbara Anne Mante (nee Johnson) was born April 15, 1937 in Vancouver, BC. She was born again as God’s child through Holy Baptism on January 27, 1939 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Vancouver. Barb renewed her baptismal vows at her Confirmation on February 1, 1952 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in New Westminster. Barb passed into the loving arms of her Savior on March 26, 2021.
Barb was a healer, graduating from St. Paul’s Hospital School of Nursing in Vancouver in September 1958. She was hired by Chilliwack General Hospital and worked there until her retirement from nursing in August 1987. Barb’s next career was a family business venture. She and son David operated Primus Pet Foods in Chilliwack for eight years while son Ken managed the Pop Shoppe in the same location.
Barb also gave a lifetime of service to her Lord at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Chilliwack. She served in many capacities, including as the congregation’s first office secretary, and later as its treasurer, but her real passion was for Christian Education. She was the Sunday School Superintendent for many years and then moved on to lead many adult education programs, including a very popular ladies’ Bible study, which she continued until declining health prevented her from doing so. Barb also faithfully served the Lutheran Woman’s Missionary League in many capacities at both the local and provincial level.
Barb married Nicolaas Mante on October 4, 1958 and they raised three sons on their family dairy farm in Yarrow. Barb was predeceased by her husband Nic in 1988 and by their son Kenneth. She is survived by two sons, David (Sandy) and Nicolas (Corinna), five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers Robert and Brian Brown and their families. For those who desire, donations in memory of Barb may be made to the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League or Lutheran Bible Translators-Canada.
“I have fought a good fight; I have finished my course; I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me on that Day — and not to me only, but unto all those also who love His appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8
