He is survived by his wife Liu Chau-In Hsu; his two children Rodney And Larson; and four grandchildren, Elliot, Erik, Evan, and Hanna.
Chin-Hwa was born on February 28th, 1937 in Taiwan. Growing up during World War II, he survived his childhood through poverty in rural Taiwan but found passion in classical music through school. At the age of 17, he discovered his love of piano and practiced 10 to 12 hours a day for three years before being accepted into the National Taiwan University of Arts.
Throughout his music career as a classical pianist, Chin-Hwa performed in numerous solo concertos, as well as accompanied countless musicians from both Taiwan and abroad. He also represented Taiwan on the international scene, including the International Madame Butterfly Competition in 1967.
When he married Liu Chau-In in his late 30s, he ended his performing career and began his teaching career so he could raise his family. He taught thousands of students of all ages, both from home and as an instructor at the university. For several decades, Chin-Hwa hosted recital concerts for his students, including his duet concerts with former students during his retirement. Today, his students can be found around the world, spreading his love for classical music.
His other passion was fishing. While residing in Taiwan, Chin-Hwa could often be found fishing along the rugged coastline in the rough sea. After he and his family immigrated to Vancouver Canada in 1994, he carried on this passion by fishing for Pacific salmon in many rivers of British Columbia with his son Rodney. During the last five years, he would regularly fish along the Chilliwack River near his residence for chinook, coho, chum and pink salmon in the fall.
Chin-Hwa was a strong willed and resilient man who never feared failures or backed down from hardships. He was incredibly social and never afraid of being judged. Those who have interacted with him would forever remember his big, infectious, genuine smile.
A visitation memorial will be held at 10am-12pm on September 1st, 2023 at Woodlawn Mt. Cheam Funeral Home in Chilliwack on Hocking Ave.
